Last year I was fortunate enough to have been able to record a Beekeeping DVD for Beginners. In fact, upon reflection, it
was a mixture of information for both Beginner Beekeepers and Non Beekeepers who might be a little interested in the topic. If you are interested in some of the photos that were taken during the filming of the beekeeping DVD you can find some here in my post about Beekeeping DVD with Charlie Dimmock.
This Beekeeping DVD has had mixed reviews so far and, if I am honest, I never really like to talk about it much, but I thought I would share some of the reviews with you to make up your own mind.
Beecraft Magazine – “It is certainly a useful guide for someone starting beekeeping. All the main steps that a beginner needs to understand to get started are demonstrated in separate chapters. The means a new beekeeper can dip in when required or be reminded about some manipulation technique that is not clear when tried out on their bees”
BBKA News – Not such a good review but I note that the inexperienced beekeeper was actually their Press Secretary and had been beekeeping for 25yrs (a bit unfair I thought..) “I am not sure this DVD should be relied upon to give you the basics. It strikes me there is no substitute for proper hands-on training with the support of a beekeeping mentor and a strong local association. what it does have are some good shots of bees and beekeeping equipment and I can see it potentially forming the basis of some lively discussion with groups of beginners” – This is one of the kinder sections of the review though Gill, the inexperienced beekeeper (!) did say that I was “very engaging and enthusiastic and clearly loves his subject”. Might let her off a little bit.
The Beekeeping DVD was also nominated recently in the Royal Television Society Awards which was apparently a pretty big thing. We had made the shortlist for “Independent broadcasts not made for TV” and were down to the final three going up against some pretty stiff competition. Sadly we didn’t win (the winner was an amazing production about Bread – you can see the website of the guys that won here. Anyhow I was pretty pleased with the feedback, announced at the award which was given by the 4 judges who judged our category.
“The Beekeeping DVD is a comprehensive and enthusiastic introduction to bee-keeping with an engaging expert bringing his passion to the screen”
So there you have it three reviews for the Beekeeping DVD. Should you want to buy a copy you can go through to the website here and it is priced £19.98. A snippet of the Beekeeping DVD is below:
