So the winter is upon us and the gardening and beekeeping world is shutting down. Its funny, I have a mixture of slight melancholy about it. Part of me is sad that it all now slows down, the garden doesn’t look as nice as it did several weeks ago, the bees are less active and are all tucked up trying to keep Queenie warm (at a constant 35 degrees) and yet there is also the other side of me that is a little bit happy about it all. It is the tidy up time (I know, I know, the fashion at the moment is to leave the garden relatively undisturbed to allow wildlife to thrive but I really struggle with this) and the beds start to look nice again without all the rather sad looking dead plants which were once proud to fill the beds. Sorry for this but it is a small reminder for me when I did small bits to the garden for next year!

Today was a glorious day and it was a true Autuminal day. Lovely rich sunshine, low in the sky bouncing off the few remaining flowers. Lovely, I was a very happy man.

I have to say this morning was absolutely beautiful. I was up at my usual time of 6am to have a quick potter outside before I go to work and it was stunning. However, this morning I was a little apprehensive. I was due to go to the allotment and build some raised beds. This meant being in a 6ft radius of the hive and bearing in mind the last two times I have been up at the allotment I have been chased away I wasn’t holding up much hope! As you all know I often do a photographic update of the garden each month (so I can remember what on earth has been planted and where!). This month I have been a little delayed as I have tried to work out a better way of showing things. I hope this slideshow has paid off………but let me know what you think…..

A bit of an up and down week this week. The weather has been amazing which has caused all manner of problems with watering. The first casualty of this were the runner beans – although not sure if this was the late and hard frost we have had recently as well. My pumpkins and squash were also casualties and the sweetcorn wasn’t looking particularly great this morning either. I just don’t think I was watering them enough. Read the rest of this entry »

What a great bank holiday weekend and lots achieved today. It all seems to be a little bit closer than two days ago. Firstly, after the most amazing April (the Brits were out sunbathing making sure that lobster colour was on full show!) has come the most awful start to May – just when my shed needs to be built! It always happens in the UK, just when it looks like we are going to have three nice days off, the weathermen decide to suggest that this weekend will be terrible. This is what happened to me yesterday morning…. Read the rest of this entry »

I hope you can all help here as I want to make sure I get it right. I have picked several places where I could put my hive but want others opinions on exactly where. I hope you can help me as I have produced a video showing the areas and also a very basic plan to go with it with the areas marked. Read the rest of this entry »

A great day today with some fantastic time spent on the allotment and in the Garden. The free shed I got from next door has finally been transported up to the allotment with the help of the neighbours. I just have to build a base for it now and then start to build the thing!
