As always on the first of the month I always take some photos of the flower beds and vegetable beds just so I can remind myself about what is going on each year! Read the rest of this entry »

A great day today with some fantastic time spent on the allotment and in the Garden. The free shed I got from next door has finally been transported up to the allotment with the help of the neighbours. I just have to build a base for it now and then start to build the thing! Each month I take a photo of various areas of my garden just so I can keep a memory of what I had done the previous year. This is Aprils memory! Read the rest of this entry »

The hysteria and excitement similar to that experienced by a four year old at Christmas has now

My jigsaw puzzle hive!
subsided. The realisation that I actually ordered a flat packed hive has actually set in! What was I thinking…….How on earth do I build this thing especially considering my “Dry Run” was a complete disaster, having now looked at the actual instructions! If I was running a B&B for Bees the AA would simply not even bother coming out to give me a rating. It was all wrong! Read the rest of this entry »

So, as many of you have seen, the hive has arrived. Now comes the difficult bit of building the actual thing! Now, I have to admit, opening the package was quite exciting and something that I could not describe to anyone was the smell of the wood. It was lovely and as if it has just been cut. A really delightful smell. Anyhow, the 26 separate segments of wood and the very evident roof have to be fitted together somehow. Bearing in mind the only bit of woodwork I have ever done in my short life was building a bench like you would see in any park around the world. You know, the ones where you either steer clear of because they are either inhabited by the local cider drinkers or slightly strange people that sit down on them, knees firmly together balancing a clear plastic lunch box while they bite down into a triangular sandwich with the crusts cut off. Moving swiftly on; my bench wasn’t exactly the the greatest success as I measured up a little bit wrong and to be honest it would only have fitted one of the cider drinkers and half of anerdy triangular sandwich eater. Add to the fact that the joints were terrible I wasn’t marked particularly well. Therefore I am not holding much hope for this beehive but…. Read the rest of this entry »

Off the back of the liaison with the farmer yesterday, I have to say this has been a fantastic weekend especially with it being Jo’s second “Mothers Day” today. Ironically, because we were mostly at home this weekend it actually meant I was able to spend some time in the garden. I have become the king of a new gardening technique; The “what you can do in two hours” technique which is basically the time Sebastian has to sleep each afternoon. It is like a mad dash against time. I have to eat, shower, get “Gardening dressed” and then get out there and have a mad one and a half hours before I reverse all of the initial moves to enable me to be ready for Sebastian to wake up again. So what did I get done this weekend? Read the rest of this entry »
I have had this feeling now for some time that all this could be completely hot air. I have created a lovely blog (well I think so!) and twitter pages, I have commented on forums sites about being a beginner beekeeper and even gone so far as to order a hive – just heard news that my flat packed hive arrives on Friday, hurrah! – but there is one slight problem………where on earth am I going to get some bees from! Its been a nice couple of days….nothing has gone wrong! There was the interesting event of our lovely neighbours moving out who hadn’t started packing until the day before. Imagine trying to empty a four bedroom house, with no professional help, while trying to look after two kids aged 10 and 3, two dogs, three cats, three chickens and two gerbils. It was never going to be a relaxing 24hrs and it certainly didn’t look like a relaxing final hour either as the removals company came for our new neighours, Nicky and Jo (who seem lovely). Poor Duncan and Jane were literally throwing their lifelong belongings into the back of a small horsebox, yes a small horsebox. Read the rest of this entry »

So my usual Sunday night blog post written whilst sitting in front of a roaring fire while drinking homemade cider is being rudely interrupted by an airport lounge in Newcastle. Corporate life has taken me away up North where it is very, very cold and therefore this post is being written while I wait in a rather lovely, colourful, inspiring departure lounge.
